I-Cane systems deliver independent mobility for blind and
visual impaired. Using I-Cane systems will allow them to walk and travel known
and unknown routes in a safe way. The I-Cane is an all in one system within the
shape of white cane. Thus the user keeps being guarded by legal ruling when
using the latest technology.
The I-Cane system has four key features:
Tactile Communication
A unique and patented
man-machine interface has been developed by the I-Cane team together with the
technical university of Delft and ir. M. de Wildt. The tactile arrow provides
direct and intuitive instructions to the i-Cane user. The interface doesn’t
burden the ears which can still be used for echolocation or scanning the
environment.
Obstacle avoidance
Finding the free path is a key issue for pedestrians especially with visual
impairment. I-Cane has developed a technology solutions which provides the
information to find the free path without hinderance in pace. Tests conducted
at Visio and Bartimeus are ongoing and demonstrate the added value of this
i-Cane solution
Navigation and
positioning
The I-Cane system will be able to navigate its user from A to B. This requires
highly accurate positioning and clear and timely instructions. The I-Cane
performance exceeds current offerings from navigation systems which are
developed for people with normal sight (especially car drivers).
Safety
First of all the I-Cane has the look and feel of a white cane. This gives
comfort and condidence to its users but also continues the recognition by other
people on the streets.
Furtermore the I-Cane systems communicate to the outside world. This provides
support functions which can tell the user his or her location and creates the
possibility to contact family or helpdesk.
